Wilda Young Chappell - An Amazing Person..
Wilda Aileen Young Chappell, of Hillsboro , died Wednesday, May 9, 2007, 10 days before her 80th birthday, at Pocahontas Center . She was born May 19, 1927, in Marlinton. Her beloved husband, John S. Chappell, preceded her in death along with her parents, Allen Clark and Nell Maupin Young.
An inspiration to all who knew her, Wilda embraced and nurtured not only her family, but a myriad of individuals in the extended community. Her life was a selfless labor of love, while working full-time, farming and gardening, and contributing to church and local organizations. A member of Oak Grove Presbyterian Church, Wilda joyfully sang in the choir, held many positions, and was the church's first elected female elder. She retired after 30 years from Denmar State Hospital , where she whistled through her work as an x-ray and lab technician. Wilda was an active 4-H leader, a member of Marlinton Chapter 97 Order of the Eastern Star, a 50-year member of Hillsboro CEOS, a Farm Bureau member, a volunteer for Greenbrier Valley Hospice, a lifetime blood donor, and gave generously to many other causes.
She is survived by four daughters and their spouses: Karen Daniels, Ramona and Phillip Anderson, Rebecca and Marvin (Butch) Perry, and Susan Chappell (Flaim). Her seven grandchildren and spouses include: Pam and Mike Kennedy, John Perry and fiancé, Kristy Kelly, Karen Anderson, Sarah and Nick Johnson, Nathan Chappell Flaim, Kevin Chappell Flaim, and Laura Anderson. She has three great grandchildren: Josh Blair, Chad Kennedy, and Mary Grace Bannon. Her brothers and sisters-in-law are Allen and Nancy Young, of Natural Bridge , Virginia , and Jon and Judy Young, of Gouldsboro , Maine .
Wilda's life was celebrated in tribute and song at Oak Grove Presbyterian Church, Saturday, May 12, at 2 p.m., officiated by the Rev. Lucy Youngblood. Burial followed at Oak Grove Cemetery , within sight of her home and the mountains she loved.
Memorials may be made to the Hillsboro Public Library (HC 64 Box 398, Hillsboro , West Virginia 24946) or the Family Refuge Center or High Rocks Academy .
My notes --- Patti and I were to visit Wilda on our trip that we had planned with her for months. Unfortunately about one month before we could get to West Virginia, Wilda's helath worsened and we were not able to see her. But thanks to Susan Chappell for keeping us informed, we still were deeply disappointed. Linda Beard Corwin visited Wilda some years ago with Brian Beard (my brother) and remembered recently when Hilda gave them Rhubarb and Cottage Cheese.. the best she ever had. A good friend of my family, god speed...
