Bear Stories...

While scanning through the Greenbrier Independent Newspaper of the 1880's, several stories regarding the Beard's came to light, mainly for James Henry "Moffet" Beard (my great-great grandfather) and his sons/brothers. The account can be found on the web page ---

Under "Bear Stories".

One of the mysteries solved for Moffet Beard is why he died so young, age 53. One of his sons was only three years old at the time. The newspaper accounts reveal his death as liver cancer at this young age.

Moffet Beard history has come up in several places, from his service in the confederate army in the Civil War, to his conflict with his father (Josiah Jonas Beard) and the minister of the Oak Grove Church in Hillsboro, to improvements on the roads around Hillsboro, and finally the Bear Hunt and then shortly after his passing.

Moffet Beard's son was Josiah "Paul" Beard (who died in a state hospital at the age of 62), his son Julian "Lynn" Beard, and his son Julian "Ralph" Beard, my father.

Also mentioned in these articles are Charles Woods Beard, Jacob Warwick Beard, Richard McNeel Beard, and Edwin Luther Beard.

An interesting article in the 1880's Greenbrier Independent discusses the departure of Rev. Absalom Syndenstricker and family to China, to perform missionary work there. Absalom was the father of no less than Pearl Syndenstricker Buck (Pearl S. Buck) who went on to write "The Good Earth", her prize winning book discussing her experiences in mainland China in her life there.
